Ring-tailed Mongoose, Montagne d’Ambre National Park, Madagascar

The Ring-tailed Mongoose (Galidia elegans dambrensis) can only be found on Madagascar, it is found in forests of the east, north, and west from sea level up to 1,950m.  They are most often seen in pairs or small family groups.  They excavate dens at the base of trees or stream banks with a number of exits.  It is equally at home on the ground or in trees, and it also swims well.

Its diet includes small lemurs, rodents, terrestrial birds, smaller reptiles , and even fish.  Large eggs and snails are broken in typical mongoose fashion – holding them between forepaws, and kicking it against a hard surface.

We saw this interesting species on two occasions at the Montagne d’Ambre National Park where they are quite common and not too shy.
